Karl Maisel (born November 3, 1890 in Vienna ; † March 13, 1982 ibid) was an Austrian trade unionist and politician ( SPÖ ).

Life

Karl Maisel learned the trade of machine fitter and was already active in the free trade unions in his youth.

politics

Maisel was a member of the Vienna City Council from 1932 to 1934 . After the trade union ban in 1934, he joined the Revolutionary Socialists . This was followed by arrests during the time of Austrofascism and the time of National Socialism in Austria .

Immediately after the end of the war he took part in the re-establishment of the metalworkers' union, of which he was chairman from 1945 to 1962. During this time he was also chairman of the Socialist Unionists Group . He was elected as a member of the National Council in 1945 and was a member of it until 1959.

In the Figl government he took over the office of Federal Minister for Social Administration. In this function he initiated various social laws, e.g. B. the Workers' Leave Act and the Unemployment Welfare Act. He saw the entry into force of the General Social Insurance Act (ASVG) on January 1, 1956 as his most important achievement . It regulates the compulsory insurance of the employed ( health insurance , accident insurance , pension insurance ). From 1948 to 1959 Maisel was also Vice President of the ÖGB .

In 1956 he resigned from the ministerial office and became president of the Vienna Chamber of Labor (until 1964).

From 1946 to 1962 he was also president of the ARBÖ .
