Life

Born the twelfth child of a family of railway workers, Sagmeister grew up in Wiener Neustadt . After graduating from the commercial academy of the Viennese merchants' association, he first worked as an accountant at the Steyr consumer cooperative and then took on restructuring tasks and managerial functions at the Trumau , Waldviertel and Leobersdorf consumer cooperatives . The thoroughbred manager Sagmeister, who was considered " Jewish quipped " due to his marriage , was unable to make a professional career in the Nazi regime, but was also not called up for military service. In 1945 he was initially the public administrator of the soap companyschicht AG, then from November 3, 1946 Chairman of the Management Board of the Austrian branch of Unilever AG. From January 11, 1947 to November 8, 1949, he was a member of the Federal Government Figl I as Federal Minister for People's Nutrition .

Association director Andreas Vukovich invited Sagmeister to return to the consumer cooperative movement after he left his ministerial office. He decided to waive his right of return to Unilever in favor of a consultancy contract and became first director (de facto general director) of the consumer cooperative Vienna and the surrounding area (KGW). Sagmeister performed this function successfully until 1972. As a representative of the strongest, namely the capital's consumer cooperative, Sagmeister rivaled, as is usual in such network structures, with the boss of the large-scale purchasing company dominated by the provincial cooperatives, in this case with the equally authoritarian GöC general director , Andreas Korp . The climax of these internal disputes took place in 1961. Sagmeister remained KGW chairman until 1975.

In addition to his formative role in the Austrian consumer cooperatives, Otto Sagmeister u. a.
