Vinzenz Übeleis

Vinzenz Übeleis (born August 16, 1889 in Gramastetten , Upper Austria , † April 5, 1967 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician .

Life

Vincent Übeleis attended elementary and middle school , and in 1909 officials at the Austrian State Railways .

However, his political career did not begin until 1919, when he was elected Vice Mayor of the city of Attnang-Puchheim for a few months until 1920 . He then became a member of the regional workers' council of Upper Austria until 1922, and from 1922 a member of the municipal council of the regional capital Linz . In 1926 he was elected to the city council and in 1930 became a member of the Upper Austrian state parliament . In 1934 he was dismissed from the civil service and retired into pension . After the annexation to Nazi Germany , Übeleis became involved in the now illegal railway workers' union .

In December 1945 he was sent to the National Council as a member of the SPÖ , where he held his mandate until March 1953. Leopold Figl appointed Übeleis Austrian Minister of Transport between December 1945 and November 1949 and then State Secretary from November 1949 to April 1953 .

After the war, Übeleis was also instrumental in building the railway workers' union for Vienna Westbahnhof , where he was initially appointed central secretary. After leaving the National Council, Übeleis became ÖBB General Director between 1953 and 1955 .
