The Austrian Federal Government Vranitzky I (Coalition SPÖ - FPÖ ) was formed without prior election to the National Council and was in office, appointed by Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger , from June 16 to November 25, 1986 . Afterwards she was entrusted with the continuation of business by the new Federal President Kurt Waldheim until January 21, 1987, the start date of the second Vranitzky cabinet , an SPÖ-ÖVP government.

Franz Vranitzky had taken over the office of Federal Chancellor from Fred Sinowatz ( red-blue coalition since 1983), who had resigned after the election of Kurt Waldheim as Federal President . Vranitzky was not to head this coalition for long: New elections were held on November 23, 1986 , after Jörg Haider was elected chairman of the FPÖ in September and was found to be unacceptable by the SPÖ as vice chancellor instead of Norbert Steger .
