Ministry of Agriculture in Austria-Hungary (1867–1918)

The Imperial and Royal Agriculture Ministry for Cisleithanien (Austrian Lands: Habsburg Hereditary Lands and Bohemian Crown) was founded in 1867. In addition to agricultural matters, forestry matters were also subordinate to him from the start , as well as hunting and fishing, as well as hydraulic engineering (as long as it was not a matter of traffic or military interests). An important year in this regard is 1884, which is considered to be the founding year of today's Federal Hydraulic Engineering Administration (amelioration law, now hydraulic engineering promotion law ) as well as torrent and avalanche control .

The first minister was Alfred Józef Potocki .

Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in the First Republic (1918–1934)

In the First Republic , the Ministry was called the State Office for Agriculture from 1918 to 1919 , then the State Office for Agriculture and Forestry . The first republican state secretary was Josef Stöckler from November 12, 1918 . From 1920 the office was called the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry , the first Federal Minister of Austria was Karl Renner from June 24, 1920.

Ministry in the state until the "Anschluss" (1934–1938)

With the “Anschluss” of Austria , the Ministry ceased to exist in 1938.

Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in the Second Republic (1945–2000)

In April 1945, a state office for agriculture and forestry was provisionally set up again in the Second Republic ; State Secretary was Rudolf Buchinger . Then the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry was restored, the first minister after the Second World War was Josef Kraus from 26 Sep. 1945.

Federal Ministry for Health and Environmental Protection (1972–1987)

On February 2, 1972, environmental protection concerns from three other departments were combined and initially linked to the health department. In 1975, with the new forest law, torrent and avalanche control came into being , which was incorporated into forestry (previously the forestry service for torrent and avalanche control ), so the agendas of water management, insofar as they are a federal matter, were upgraded.

The first Federal Minister for Health and Environmental Protection was Ingrid Leodolter .

Federal Ministry for the Environment, Youth and Family (1987–2000)

On April 1, 1987, the Environment Minister Marilies Flemming gave up the responsibility for health and took over responsibility for youth and family instead. This combination of family and environment ministries was interrupted from May 4, 1995 to May 1, 1996, when Martin Bartenstein was the only environment minister. However, on March 12, 1996, and definitely on May 1, 1996, he also took over the family department.

Combination of tasks of the Ministry of Life (2000-2014)

In 2000, in the Schüssel I government, the environmental responsibilities of the Ministry of the Environment were combined with the Ministry of Agriculture. The Ministry of Environment's responsibilities for youth and families were transferred to the Ministry of Social Affairs .

In 2004, the then Environment Minister Josef Pröll launched the four-week campaign “ Sustainable Weeks” , which is intended to draw attention to ecological and socially acceptable products once a year with the aim of creating awareness for sustainable consumption. In 2010, after Nikolaus Berlakovich took office , the campaign was continued as a year-round initiative under the name “Buy consciously”.

A project to promote traditional cuisine in Austria was created in 2009 with the traditional food project , in which, in cooperation with the Austrian Culinary Heritage Board, products are recorded that have been anchored in the respective region for at least three generations or 75 years.

In order to strengthen the importance of food from the own region, the umbrella brand Genuss Region Österreich has been awarded together with Agrarmarkt Austria since 2011 .

Restructuring in 2014

In March, Minister Rupprecht, who has been in office since December 2013, presented his basic political program and at the same time announced a structural reorganization of the BMLFUW. Section I (Law) is to be dissolved. Furthermore, the Minister announced the renaming of the BMLFUW from the Ministry of Life to the Ministry for an Austria worth living in .
