The Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) is a company owned by the Republic of Austria ( Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection and the Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Regions and Tourism ). The company was established in 2002 on the basis of the Health and Food Safety Act ( Federal Law Gazette I No. 63/2002 ). Your tasks are in the areas of food and nutrition safety, human and animal health, drug control and radiation protection.
AGES is based in Vienna - Donaustadt . There are a total of nine operating sites across Austria, spread across Vienna, Mödling , Graz , Linz , Salzburg and Innsbruck . AGES also operates test stations at other locations.
AGES itself is not an authority. The Federal Office for Food Safety and the Federal Office for Safety in Health Care are affiliated with it and perform official tasks in the areas mentioned. Furthermore, AGES is also responsible for the office for veterinary certification .

The Health and Food Safety Act defines the tasks of the AGES. These consist in particular of examinations and assessments in the areas of human medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmaceuticals and medical products, food and agricultural inputs. This includes, in particular, participation in the fight against infectious diseases, epidemics and pandemics .

Federal Office for Food Security
The Federal Office for Food Safety is a federal authority established in accordance with Section 6 of the Health and Food Safety Act, the enforcement tasks in the field of fertilizers, animal feed, plant protection, plant protection products, plant material, seeds, plant variety protection and marketing standards - and the Chemicals Act are transferred. The Federal Minister for Agriculture, Regions and Tourism oversees the Federal Office and appoints one of the managing directors of AGES to head the Federal Office. The Federal Office uses the AGES staff to carry out its tasks.
Federal Office for Safety in Health Care
The Federal Office for Safety in Health Care is a federal authority set up in accordance with Section 6a of the Health and Food Safety Act, which is entrusted with enforcement tasks in the areas of pharmaceuticals, the importation of medicinal products, blood safety, medical products, prescription, tissue safety and addictive substances law . The Federal Minister for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection oversees the Federal Office. The Federal Office consists of three members who are appointed by the Federal Minister and who decide by majority vote. The Federal Office uses the AGES staff to carry out its tasks.
Veterinary Certification Office
The office for veterinary certification is a joint institution of AGES, the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection and the Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Regions and Tourism established in accordance with Section 6b of the Health and Food Safety Act .
