Alfred Józef Potocki (actually Alfred II. Józef Marian Count Potocki von Pilawa ; born July 29, 1817 or 1822 in Łańcut , Kingdom of Galicia , today Poland ; † May 18, 1889 in Paris ) was a Polish aristocrat and Prime Minister of Cisleithania in Austria-Hungary .

Life

From the magnate dynasty of Potocki's coming, his parents were Alfred Wojciech Potocki (1786-1862) and Józefina Maria Czartoryska (1787-1862), he was already in 1848 Member of the Viennese Parliament. At the executive level, Potocki was governor of Galicia from 1875 to 1883 . As a liberal-conservative monarchist, he not only supported the imperial concept of Emperor Franz Joseph I , but also pleaded for a peaceful solution to the growing Polish-Ukrainian conflict. On his home estates, Potocki, one of the richest Poles of his time, was one of the modernizers of agriculture and agribusiness. He also campaigned for the strengthening of culture and science, for example as a co-founder of the Akademia Umiejętności in Kraków in 1873. He was the grandson of the writer Jan Potocki .
