Rudolf Brestel (born May 16, 1816 in Vienna ; † March 3, 1881 ibid) was an Austrian politician.

Rudolf Brestel was an assistant at the Vienna observatory from 1836 to 1840 and then taught mathematics at the universities in Olomouc and Vienna. In 1848 he was elected as a liberal member of the Austrian Reichstag . After the suppression of the revolution of 1848/1849 he lost his position as professor and was persecuted politically. He was active as a journalist and, as secretary, was involved in the establishment of the Credit Institute for Trade and Industry in 1856 . In 1861 he was elected to the state parliament of Lower Austria , from 1864 to 1881 he was a member of the Austrian Imperial Council . From December 30, 1867 (appointed by Emperor Franz Joseph I ) until his resignation on April 4, 1870, effective April 12, he was Minister of Finance in the so-called Citizens' Ministry , of which Auersperg was the first Prime Minister . In this function he succeeded in reducing the deficit by increasing taxes and converting the national debt to pension debt.

In 1883 the Brestelgasse in Vienna- Ottakring (16th district) was named after him.
