Potocki (noble family)
Potocki is the name of a Polish magnate family .
history
The Potockis are a famous aristocratic family whose origins lie in the town of Potok in Lesser Poland . The family was deeply involved in the history of Poland, especially the eastern Polish border region, today's Ukraine . The family is known for a large number of Polish statesmen, military leaders and cultural promoters.
The first known Potocki was Żyrosław z Potoka. The children of his son Alexander were the first parents of new noble families, such as the Moskorzewkis , Stanisławskis , Tworowskis , Borowskis and Stosłdowskis .
Jakub Potocki (around 1481–1551) was the progenitor of the Potocki magnate line .
The magnate line split into three main lines:
- "Linia hetmańska" ("Srebrna Pilawa"), in German: " Hetmanslinie " ("Silver Pilawa"),
- "Linia Prymasowa" ("Złota Pilawa"), in German: "Hauptlinie" ("Golden Pilawa"),
- "Żelazna Pilawa", which is considered the oldest, in German: "Iron Pilawa".
The Złota Pilawa received the title of Count in 1606 from the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation .
In 1631 Stefan Potocki, the founder of the "Złota Pilawa" line, died and was buried in Złoty Potok ( Golden Potok , a village belonging to his line). His descendants began to use their coat of arms in gold, which is why the line was called "Złota Pilawa" ( Golden Pilawa ).
The 3 main lines were divided into further branches (Polish Gałąź ) according to time :
- "Gałąź łańcucka",
- "Gałąź krzeszowicka",
- "Gałąź tulczyńska",
- "Gałąź podhajecka",
- "Gałąź wilanowska",
- "Gałąź buczacka",
- "Gałąź smotrycka",
- "Gałąź lwowska",
- "Gałąź guzowska,
- "Gałąź chrząstowska".
Named after the headquarters of each branch.
Coat of arms and motto
The Potocki family used the Pilawa coat of arms and their motto was "Scutum opponebat scuto" ( shield fights shield ).

Potockis and vodka
The Potockis distilled schnapps in their famous Łancut residence, part of which was the oldest distillery in Poland. The Potockis are better known for their contribution to the Polish military, politics and cultural history over 600 years.
When the Potockis acquired their headquarters in Łancut in 1816, the distillery, which had already existed in 1784, was part of the acquisition. The Potockis expanded this intensively in the 19th century.
Count Alfred Potocki's distillery was the Habsburg court supplier for vodka, brandy and rum.
Today Potocki Wódka is produced in central Poland under the current owner, Count Jan-Roman Potocki.
