Count Stanisław Kostka Potocki (born November 1755 in Lublin , † September 14, 1821 in Wilanów ) was a Polish nobleman, politician, general, member of parliament, enlightener , Freemason, writer, patron, architect, artist, archaeologist, art theorist, art collector and graduate of the Collegium Nobilium in Warsaw . His brother was Ignacy Potocki .

Potocki was connected to the Enlightenment . He was in the Polish civil service as a member of parliament in 1776, 1786 and from 1788 to 1791 one of the leaders of the Reform Party at the Four-Year Sejm and co-creator of the constitution of May 3, 1791 . From 1797 he was Minister of Education, in the Napoleonic Duchy of Warsaw President of the Education Directorate and in 1818 President of the Senate. He was a co-founder of the Warsaw Society of Friends of Science and the University of Warsaw .

Well educated and interested, Potocki was interested in the Polish language and history. He translated Johann Joachim Winckelmann's writings into Polish and in 1779 wrote “De l'éloquence et du style” and “Idées d'architecture”. In 1820 he wrote the satirical novel "Podróż do Ciemnogrodu".

After traveling in Italy and France, Potocki had the famous garden in Olesin near Kurów laid out in 1782 . In 1805 he made his extensive collections in the Wilanów Palace accessible to the public. Potocki became Grand Master of the Polish Masonic Order in 1812.

Potocki was married to Aleksandra Princess Lubomirska .
