Count Roman Ignacy Franciszek Potocki (born February 28, 1750 in Radzyń Podlaski , Poland , † August 30, 1809 in Vienna , Austria ) was a Polish nobleman , statesman , writer and publicist from the Potocki family .

Life

Ignacy Potocki studied theology and law in Rome before he worked in the Commission for the National Education of the aristocratic Republic of Poland-Lithuania from 1772 . He belonged to this first "Ministry of Education" of modern times until 1791, where he was mainly involved in the publication of textbooks. During this time he also received the Order of the White Eagle for his services .

Politically, especially in later years, Potocki supported King Stanisław August Poniatowski , who was elected in the last free election on September 7, 1764 , and belonged to the enlightened and reform-oriented Familia party around August Aleksander Czartoryski . On March 29, 1790, he brokered an alliance with Prussia . The Enlightenment then took part in drafting the constitution of May 3, 1791 . After the defeat of the reformers in the Russo-Polish War of 1792 , he left Poland. A short time later he returned and supported the Kościuszko uprising in 1794 . After its suppression, Potocki was arrested by the Russian authorities, but released again in 1796. He then settled in Galicia and devoted himself to historical studies.
