Tultschyn ( Ukrainian Тульчин ; Russian Tultschin , Polish Tulczyn , Romanian Tulcin ) is a city of 15,300 inhabitants (2017) in the Vinnytsia Oblast of western Ukraine . It is the administrative center of the Tultschyn Rajon of the same name .

Geographical location

The city is located about 85 km southeast of the Oblast center Vinnytsia on the bank of the Kinashev ( Сільниця ), a 67 km long tributary of the Southern Bug and borders the village of Kynaschiw in the east . The regional road P – 08 and the territorial road T – 02–22 run through Tultschyn .

history

The first written information about the village comes from the year 1607 and the city was first mentioned in writing as Nestervar on July 3, 1648. It came under Polish sovereignty in 1667 under the name Tulczyn . In the 17th century the village became an important trading center in Podolia and in 1787 received Magdeburg town charter . In 1793 Tultschyn became part of the Russian Empire . Tultschyn was a center of the Decembrists . During the Second World War it was occupied by Romanian troops from July 23, 1941 to March 15, 1944 and during this period of occupation it was called Tulcin .

Potocki Palace

There are numerous sights in the city, such as the Potocki Palace from 1785, the house of the Decembrists from the 18th century, which is now home to the local museum, the Hliklicha House from 1912 and the Assumption of Mary. Church from 1789.
