Hniwan ( Ukrainian Гнівань ; Russian Гнивань Gniwan , Polish Hniwań ) is a city in the Ukrainian Vinnytsia Oblast . It is located about 19 kilometers southwest of the oblast capital Vinnytsia on the Southern Bug . Administratively, the village of Hryschynzi ( Грижинці ) also belongs to the city council.
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1629 and initially belonged in the Bracław Voivodeship to Poland-Lithuania , in 1795 it came to the Russian Empire and was administratively incorporated into the Podolia Governorate . In 1938 the village was given urban-type settlement status , and Hniwan has had urban status since 1981.
With the opening of the railway from Kiev to Odessa that ran through the town, the town's economic development began. Large granite quarries were built, and later a sugar factory and a concrete factory were added.
