Kalyniwka ( Ukrainian Калинівка ; Russian Калиновка Kalinowka , Polish Kalinówka ) is a city in the Ukrainian Vinnytsia Oblast .
The city is located on the river Scherd ( Жердь ), about 24 kilometers north of the oblast capital Vinnytsia .
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1774, received urban-type settlement status in 1935 and has been a town since 1979. The economic development is strongly influenced by the location at the intersection of two railway lines.
The municipality also includes the village of Pryluzke ( Прилуцьке ) and the settlements Kalyniwka Druha ( Калинівка Друга ) and Riwnynne ( Рівнинне ).
Ammunition depot
Near the city is the 48th arsenal of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (military unit A-1119), one of the largest ammunition depots in Ukraine ( ⊙ ), in which an area of 600 hectares holds up to 188,000 tons of ammunition, mostly for missile systems BM-21 , BM-27 , BM-30 and SS-21 Scarab , are stored.
On the evening of September 26, 2017, there was a fire in the depot, which resulted in series of explosions and high-flying artillery shells. As a result, more than 30,000 people living in the area were evacuated. In addition, the airspace was cordoned off within a radius of 50 kilometers around the depot, part of the rail traffic was diverted and roads in the region were closed.
Already in March 2017 there was a fire and explosions in another ammunition depot in Balaklija , killing 1 person.
