Chmilnyk ( Ukrainian Хмільник ; Russian Хмельник Chmelnik , Polish Chmielnik ) is a city in Ukraine with about 25,000 inhabitants (as of 2019). It is the administrative center of the Khmilnyk Raion , is located in the northwestern part of the Vinnytsia Oblast on the South Bug and is one of the oldest cities in Podolia .

In Chmilnyk there is a mansion, which Napoleon Orda recorded in a watercolor, and the ruins of one of the few medieval castles in central Ukraine.

history

The first written mention of Chmilnyk comes from the year 1362. In 1443 the place received city rights.

From 1434 to 1793 (with interruptions by the Turkish occupation 1672–1699) the city was part of Poland , then came to Russia and later to the Soviet Union, since 1991 it has been part of Ukraine. The city has been a district-free city under oblast administration since 1957.

The city ​​was badly damaged during World War II. After the end of the war, the mineral springs discovered in 1934 were converted into a spa.

The Polish pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski was born in 1860 in Kuryliwka (then Kuryłówka) to the southeast .
