location

Murowani Kuryliwzi is located on the Swan ( Жван ), a 48-kilometer tributary of the Dniester, 105 km southwest of the Vinnytsia oblast center .

history

The village was first mentioned in writing in 1493 and was given the status of an urban-type settlement in 1956.

In 1939, a quarter of the approximately 4,000 inhabitants were Jews. Their Yiddish elementary school had already been closed in the 1930s. After the German conquest in 1941, the small town was initially under Hungarian administration, which accepted the attacks on Jews from the Ukrainian population. In November 1941, a forced ghetto was set up under German administration, into which Jews from the area were also crammed. In August 1942, 2,300 ghetto inmates were murdered. The ghetto was practically dissolved in October 1942.
