Sharhorod ( Ukrainian Шаргород ; Russian Shargorod , Polish Szarogród ) is a city in Vinnytsia Oblast of Ukraine . It is located about 62 kilometers southwest of the oblast capital Vinnytsia on the Murashka river and is the administrative center of Sharhorod Rajon of the same name . The town council also includes the town of Poljana ( Поляна ) to the east .
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time around 1383, was granted Magdeburg city charter in 1588 and initially belonged to Poland in the Bracław Voivodeship . The Shargorod Synagogue was built in 1595, making it one of the oldest synagogues in Ukraine. Between 1674 and 1699 the city belonged to the Ottoman Empire . In 1795 Sharhorod became part of the Russian Empire and was located in the Podolia Governorate . In 1923 the village got the status of an urban-type settlement , since 1985 it has been a city.
