Synagogue in Sharhorod

The synagogue in Sharhorod , a Ukrainian city in Vinnytsia Oblast , was built in 1589, making it one of the oldest synagogues in Ukraine.

architecture

The synagogue was built as a military synagogue with walls one to two meters thick. The main room has a square floor plan of 15 x 15 m, which served as a prayer room for the men. On the north and west side there are extensions as prayer rooms for the women. The room is divided along the perimeter by four columns, which are decorated with stucco fragments from the 18th and 19th centuries.

history

During the Turkish occupation of Shargorod between 1674 and 1699, the synagogue was converted into a mosque and then, after the expulsion of the Turks, rebuilt into a synagogue in the 18th century. In the Soviet Union it was profaned in the 1930s and used as a beverage store.

In 2012 the synagogue building was returned to the small Jewish community.
