Military synagogue
As a military synagogue are synagogues called, had the defensive character and served as a refuge from military threat.
In some places in eastern Poland , defense synagogues were built in the 16th to 18th centuries to provide protection from Tatar and Cossack attacks . They also served as a refuge in the event of fires and riots.
