Bar ( Ukrainian and Russian Бар ) is a city in western Vinnytsia Oblast in central Ukraine . It is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name and has about 17,200 inhabitants (as of 2005).
history
The city was called Riw in the 14th century . In 1452 the city was destroyed by the Tatars . The newly rebuilt city has since been called a bar . At the beginning of the 16th century, the Polish Queen Bona Sforza had a large fortress built here, which was the second largest in Podolia . 1672–1674 and 1675–1699, the city was part of the Ottoman Empire . The Bar Confederation was founded here in 1768 . In the same year the Russian troops of General Petr Kretschetnikow stormed the city and destroyed the fortress.
economy
Since the 1970s there has been a compressor station in Bar for the Druzhba route built at the time, and one for the Urengoy - Uzhhorod gas route since the 1980s .
