Ludwig von Holzgethan

Ludwig Holzgethan , from 1855 Ritter von Holzgethan , from 1865 Freiherr von Holzgethan (born October 1, 1800 in Vienna ; † June 12, 1876 ibid) was an Austrian minister and for a short time Prime Minister .

Life

Ludwig Holzgethan joined the civil service as a tax clerk in 1831 and had a long career. In 1846 he became a councilor for cameras and worked in Vienna, Trieste and Linz , as the district director of the camera district administration for the Innkreis in Ried . In 1850 he came to Verona as a finance advisor . In 1852 he was appointed Ministerialrat, the Venetian Finance Prefect in Venice, and headed the financial administration of Lombardy and Veneto .

It was on April 4, 1855 in Vienna as the Imperial Councilor and financial prefect in Venice awarded the Order of Leopold by Emperor Franz Joseph I in the Austrian knighthood levied and 1860 Privy Council appointed. As such, he was elevated to the status of Austrian baron by the emperor on December 31, 1865 and made a member of the manor house . During these years he was appointed Undersecretary of State , Deputy Minister of Finance Ignaz von Plener and a member of the State Council.

In 1870 the emperor transferred the Austrian ( cisleitan ) kk finance ministry to him, first under Prime Minister Alfred Józef Potocki , then under Karl Sigmund von Hohenwart . After his resignation on October 30, 1871, Holzgethan, who remained kk Finance Minister until January 15, 1872, was also Prime Minister until November 25, 1871. On January 15, 1872 he was appointed by the monarch as Reich Finance Minister of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and remained so until his death in 1876; his successor as Cisleithan finance minister was Sisinio of Pretis-Cagnodo .

The administrative lawyer Georg Holzgethan was his older brother.
