Alexander Graf von Mensdorff-Pouilly , since 1868 first Prince of Dietrichstein zu Nikolsburg (born August 4, 1813 in Coburg , † February 14, 1871 in Prague ) was an Austrian statesman and foreign minister .

Life

He came from the family Mensdorff-Pouilly , originally from Lorraine , raised to the status of Austrian count in 1818 , which was originally only called Pouilly after an estate of the same name on the Saône , emigrated during the revolution and took the name Mensdorff .

Alexander von Mensdorff-Pouilly was the son of General Emmanuel Graf von Mensdorff-Pouilly (1777-1852) and Princess Sophie of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (d. 1835, daughter of Duke Franz von Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld ). He entered the army in 1829, was appointed Rittmeister in 1836 and major in 1844 . He fought with distinction in Italy and Hungary during the revolutionary years 1848–49 . For his military achievements during the Second Battle of Komorn on July 2, 1849, he was made a knight of the Military Order of Maria Theresa . In the same year 1849 he was promoted to colonel and in November 1850 to major general .

At the beginning of 1851 he went to Schleswig-Holstein as the Austrian commissioner and in 1852 to Saint Petersburg as the Austrian envoy . He was recalled from there in 1853, lived for a while in England and was then appointed Brigadier of the 7th Army Corps and on March 1, 1859 , Lieutenant Field Marshal . During the Polish uprising (1863) Governor General of Galicia , he distinguished himself through energy and humanity in equal measure. On October 27, 1864, he was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs as the successor to Count Rechbergs. He was the “loyal servant of his emperor” and took part in all changes in Austrian politics up to the suspension of the constitution by Belcredi and the war with Prussia in 1866 . In November 1866 he resigned and was appointed commanding general in Agram in 1870 , then in Prague.

As the consort of Countess Alexandrine "Aline" von Dietrichstein-Proskau-Leslie (1824-1906), a daughter of Joseph Franz von Dietrichstein-Proskau-Leslie, 9th Prince of Dietrichstein and owner of the rule of Nikolsburg in Moravia (1798-1858), After the death of the last imperial prince of Dietrichstein in 1864, he received the title of Austrian prince from Dietrichstein zu Nikolsburg in the primogeniture by an imperial diploma from March 20, 1869 , the remaining descendants were to bear the name Mensdorff-Pouilly-Dietrichstein . He died on March 14, 1871. His heir as 2nd Prince of Dietrichstein zu Nikolsburg was his eldest son, Hugo (1858–1920). His younger son Albert von Mensdorff-Pouilly-Dietrichstein played an important role in diplomacy before and during the First World War .
