August Franz Johann Christoph Graf von Degenfeld-Schonburg (also Schomberg; * December 10, 1798 in Gross-Kanicsa (Nagykanizsa) , Hungary ; † December 5, 1876 in Altmünster near Gmunden ) was an Austrian military master and 1860–1864 Kk Minister of War .

Life

Degenfeld-Schonburg was a scion of the noble family of the Counts of Degenfeld-Schonburg and great-grandson of the Prussian War Minister Christoph Martin II. Von Degenfeld (1689–1762). He belonged to the line to Ramholz der Degenfeld. He participated in the campaign in 1815 as an officer of infantry in part, in 1835 Major and spent several years adjutant with the General Command in Bohemia . In 1848 he led a brigade as major general and was effectively involved in the Battle of Novara in 1849 .

In October 1849 Degenfeld-Schonburg was promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal . He was then first vice governor of Mainz , in 1850 he became section head in the War Ministry . Emperor Franz Joseph used him for service in 1852 before becoming commander of the 8th Army Corps in 1855. In the Italian War of 1859 he was given the command of the coastal region as the commanding general .

In October 1860 Degenfeld-Schonburg was appointed Feldzeugmeister and Minister of War , but resigned from his position in 1864 for health reasons. During the German war in 1866, he joined temporarily back to active duty and agreed on 26 July 1866, the armistice convention of Mikulov .

August Graf von Degenfeld-Schonburg died on December 5, 1876 in Altmünster near Gmunden and was buried in the Protestant cemetery in Gmunden. He was married to Elizabeth Watson of Clonbrogan and Bossana, daughter of an Irish Esquire . From this marriage a son Christoph von Degenfeld-Schonburg and a daughter Sarah von Degenfeld-Schonburg emerged. His son Christoph von Degenfeld-Schonburg (1831–1908) was a general.

An Austrian fortress in what was then Welschtirol was named after Feldzeugmeister Degenfeld-Schonburg . It is located on a ridge above the village of Piovezzano, east of the Trento - Verona motorway, roughly at the geographical height of Lazise . On Italian maps it is shown as "ex Forte Degenfeld" .
