Sophie Friederike Karoline Luise von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld (born August 19, 1778 in Coburg ; † July 9, 1835 in Tuschimitz , Bohemia ) was a princess of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and, by marriage, Countess von Mensdorff-Pouilly .

Life

Sophie was the eldest child of Duke Franz Friedrich von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld (1750–1806), from his marriage to Auguste (1757–1831), daughter of Count Heinrich XXIV. Reuss zu Ebersdorf . Her brother Leopold became King of the Belgians in 1831, her sister Juliane was a Russian Grand Duchess and through her sister Victoria she was an aunt of the British Queen Victoria . Her brother Ernst succeeded his father as Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in 1806.

She had a particularly close relationship with her sister Antoinette , whom she often visited at Fantaisie Palace ; a refuge for French emigrants. Here she met her future husband. She married Emmanuel von Mensdorff-Pouilly (1777-1852) in Coburg on February 23, 1804 , who was raised to the rank of count in 1818.

In 1806, her husband was on vacation in Saalfeld , a side residence of the Coburg court. It was therefore possible for him after the battle near Saalfeld to release the corpse of Prince Louis Ferdinand and to protect the court of his father-in-law and his family against the arrogance of the victorious French troops.

From 1824 to 1834 Sophie lived in Mainz, where her husband was in command of the federal fortress . Here she was generally referred to as the "princess". She was active as a writer and in 1830 published her romantic "Tales and Tales". Sophie was the bearer of the Grand Cross of the Imperial Russian Order of St. Catherine . She is buried in the park of Preitenstein Castle , the family property of the Mensdorff-Pouilly family.
