Auguste Reuss zu Ebersdorf
Countess Auguste Caroline Sophie Reuss zu Ebersdorf (born January 19, 1757 in Ebersdorf ; † November 16, 1831 in Coburg ) was Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld by marriage.
Life
Auguste was the daughter of Count Heinrich XXIV. Reuss zu Ebersdorf (1724–1779) and his wife Karoline Ernestine zu Erbach-Schönberg (1727–1796). Ebersdorf was a center of Pietism in Thuringia and Augustes grandparents were admirers of this faith. Augustes great-aunt Erdmuthe Dorothea was closely associated with the Moravian Brethren . This background explains the deep religiosity of August.
Auguste was considered one of the most beautiful women of her time. Her father had the painter Johann Heinrich Tischbein commissioned a painting on which Auguste is depicted as Artemisia . He had this painting exhibited at the Perpetual Reichstag so that potential marriage candidates would become aware of his beautiful daughter.
On June 13, 1777 in Ebersdorf, she married Franz Hereditary Prince of Saxony-Coburg-Saalfeld , who, incidentally, had acquired the painting for four times the price.
As a duchess and mother, Auguste became the ancestor of important European royal families. She had traveled to Saint Petersburg with her eldest three daughters when Tsarina Catherine II was looking for a bride for her grandson Constantine. This decided on Princess Juliane. This survey also enabled Julian's siblings to benefit.
