Charlotte Augusta of Wales
Charlotte Augusta of Wales (born January 7, 1796 in Carlton House , London , † November 6, 1817 in Claremont House , Surrey ) was a British princess from the House of Hanover .
Life
HRH Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales was born on January 7, 1796in Londonas the only child of the English Crown Prince Georg, Prince of Wales , and his wife Caroline von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . Until her death she was second to the throne after her father.
In 1813 it was first promised to Wilhelm von Nassau-Orange , but broke off this engagement a year later.
In the entourage of Tsar Alexander I of Russia , Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg , who later became King of the Belgians , stayed in London in the summer of 1814 and met Charlotte Augusta. They got engaged in January 1816 and the wedding took place on May 2, 1816 at Carlton House . Contemporary witnesses judged the marriage to be very happy.
On November 5, 1817, Charlotte suffered a stillbirth and died the following day. The question of the English and Hanoverian succession to the throne was completely open again and the younger brothers of their father hastily began to look for wives.
Princess Charlotte was buried in the royal tomb of St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle .
