Georg Holzgethan

Georg Holzgethan (born September 19, 1799 in Vienna ; † August 10, 1860 there ) was an Austrian administrative lawyer and statistician .

Life

Holzgethan first studied at the kk Franzens University in Lemberg and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . He then went to the University of Vienna , where he studied law in 1822 as Dr. iur. completed. In 1823 he was accepted into the civil service and in 1839 promoted to procurator and real councilor. In 1829 he published his work Theory of Statistics , which is recognized in scientific circles . In addition, he tried to get a chair at the University of Lviv. However, this is denied him. Nevertheless, he managed to pursue a career in university administration on the side.

In addition to his work as Imperial Chamber Procurator and real Gubernialrat, Holzgethan became dean of the law faculty of Lviv University in 1833 , changed to the post of director and president of the Philosophical Faculty in 1834 , which he held until 1838 and was finally rector magnificus of the 1840/41 academic year University. However, his administrative work was little appreciated by the local population.

Holzgethan was able to establish connections to Vienna through his work in the administration of Galicia. He came to the Supreme Court in Vienna through Franz Seraph von Stadion . In 1851 Leo von Thun and Hohenstein brought him to the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Culture and Education . There he was first section councilor in 1851 and head of the newly established department for the Greek-non-unified cult. In 1853 he was appointed Ministerialrat . He is said to have supported the Thun reform .

Holzgethan was retired due to illness in 1860 and received the Knight's Cross of the Austrian Imperial Leopold Order . Shortly afterwards he passed away.

The Prime Minister of Cisleithanien and Finance Minister of Austria-Hungary Ludwig Freiherr von Holzgethan was his younger brother.
