Julius Joachim Ludwig Freiherr von Horst (born April 12, 1830 in Hermannstadt , Transylvania , † February 6, 1904 in Graz / Styria ) was an Austrian major general and statesman .

Horst joined the Austrian army as a cadet in 1844 and became an officer in 1846 . After the German War of 1866, which was so devastating for the Austrian Empire , Horst presented in a memorandum a plan for the reorganization of the Austrian army according to the Prussian model. He was then appointed to the organizing committee in Vienna , and later he was also a member of the Marshal's Council. The War Minister Freiherr von Kuhn commissioned Horst with the drafting and later also with the parliamentary representation of the bills dealing with the army reform.

In 1871 Horst became Minister of Defense , in 1873 he was appointed a privy councilor and in 1877 he was promoted to the status of baron .

On June 25, 1880 Horst resigned as minister because he did not approve of the direction taken by the Ministry of the Interior . He also renounced his mandate in the Reichsrat . He is buried in the St. Leonhard Cemetery in Graz .
