Zeno Philomenus Count Welser von Welsersheimb , Baron zu Gumpenstein (born December 1, 1835 in Laibach , † February 2, 1921 in Tab , Hungary ) was an Austrian officer , most recently Feldzeugmeister , as well as a diplomat and politician.

Life

Zeno was the son of Count Leopold Caspar Vincenz Welser von Welsersheimb, Otto Welser von Welsersheimb was his brother. At the age of 17 he entered the military as a cadet . In 1853 he became a lieutenant and in 1857 a captain in the general staff. In 1866 he was promoted to major and wing adjutant to Archduke Albrecht during the war of 1866 .

He then became military officer in Paris (until 1870) and then in Berlin (until 1875). 1882 Emperor promoted him Franz Joseph I to Field Marshal Lieutenant . From 1880 to 1905 he acted as the kk national defense minister under nine kk prime ministers . In 1887 the Kaiser appointed him a member of the manor house of the Austrian Imperial Council ; this was abolished by the first republican government on November 12, 1918.

He came from the Augsburg patrician family Welser and was 1117th bearer of the Order of the Golden Fleece , the highest-ranking order in Imperial Austria.
