Antonín Randa , also Anton Ritter von Randa (born July 8, 1834 in Bistriz , † October 6, 1914 in Dobrichowitz ) was an Austrian lawyer and politician of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy .

Life

Antonín Randa was a son who died on February 14, 1863 kk District Judge Wenceslas Randa and his wife Salomene, born New payer. His father was first a lawyer in Taus and moved to Bistriz in 1823, where he held the position of legal advisor of the former Bystřice estate until 1850. After the abolition of patrimonial jurisdiction, he became a district judge. The son Antonín attended elementary schools in his place of birth, later in Taus, from 1844 to 1850 the grammar school in Klattau and then the philosophical classes in Prague , where he began to study law at the university there in 1852 . At first he was mainly interested in economics , which he was particularly encouraged by the lively lectures by Peter Mischler .

During his studies, Randa also traveled, first in his own homeland, then in Germany, Belgium, and Switzerland, visited the exhibition in Munich in 1854 , the one in Paris in 1855 and reported on these excursions in various Prague magazines. After studying economics, he turned to civil law under the influence of Eduard Chambon and Unger . In 1858 he obtained his legal doctorate. He now devoted himself to judicial practice and became an actuary at the district court in Smichow . Then he studied Austrian civil law and in 1860 obtained the lectureship he wanted for this subject at Prague University. In 1861 he began lecturing in the Czech language. In 1862 he became an associate professor of private law at the Prague University. The number of his listeners grew steadily until there were 54 in 1866.

In 1864, Randa, together with doctors Josef Stanislav Prachenský , Jakub Škarda and others, founded the Prague Legal Association ( Právnická jednota ), which sought to spread the Czech language in the legal and judicial system of Bohemia. In the legal journal Právnik , which he co-founded in 1861 , he wrote numerous essays on Austrian civil law. With Hermenegild Jireček he worked on a Czech translation for the Institutiones Iustiniani , a considerable part of which appeared in Právnik's 1864–66 volumes . But he was also active in his subject in German and wrote many articles for German specialist journals such as the Austrian court newspaper and the archive for bill of exchange and commercial law published by Siebenhaar in Leipzig .

In 1868, Randas was appointed full professor of private law at Charles University in Prague . At the same university he later also worked as a professor for commercial and bill of exchange law. After the Prague university was divided into a Czech and a German university (1882), he was a full professor at the former institution; from 1883 to 1884 he was also rector of the Czech university. In January 1881 he became a lifelong member of the Austrian manor house , shortly afterwards a member of the Imperial Court .

Randa dealt primarily with Austrian private law in his academic publications. With his theory of ownership of securities, he made a valuable contribution to commercial law. In his legal work he was also interested in important European legal norms. Furthermore, through various recommendations, he suggested reforms that should take social change into account. Honorary legal doctorates awarded him 1888 the University of Bologna and 1900 the University of Krakow .

Politically, Randa was an active member of the Old Czech Party and in 1904 was appointed Czech countryman minister in the cabinet of Ernest von Koerber , which he held until 1906. In 1908 he became president of the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences , of which he had been a member since 1890.

The one with Angela, b. Kulik, daughter of the Austrian mathematician Jakob Philipp Kulik , married lawyer, died on October 6, 1914 at the age of 80 in Dobrichowitz. In 1918 the North Bohemian Trade Museum acquired a collection of graphics from his estate.
