Národní strana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Národní strana (German National Party ), later called Staročeši ( Old Czech ), was a political party in the Bohemian Landtag and in the Imperial Council of the Austrian monarchy .

history

The Národní strana was created after the Slavs Congress in 1848 to represent the interests of Bohemian citizens. Thus the old Národní strana is considered to be the oldest Czech party. She took up political activity especially after the fall of Bach's absolutism in 1859. Various political and idealistic groups, including Catholics, found their home in the party. The party was mainly held together by its leaders, the liberals František Palacký , František Ladislav Rieger , Josef Kaizl and August Brauner . Albert Pražák founded and headed an independent branch of the party in Moravia .

The first break in Národní strana occurred in 1861 when the question of the position of the Bohemian nobility on the Polish uprising was discussed. In 1863 the party split into the leading, conservative wing Staročeši (Old Czechs) and the democratically oriented wing Mladočeši (Young Czechs).

The clashes lasted until 1874, when the Národní strana svobodomyslná ( National Party of Free Thoughts ) was founded. The party accepted federalism, national law and pursued patriotic and liberal goals.

From 1863 to 1891 the National Party was partially represented in the Austrian Reichsrat . From 1872 to 1895 she represented the conservative bourgeoisie in the Bohemian state parliament , after which she was mainly active at the municipal level, and for a time also supported the politics of the Young Czechs.

Since 1880, however, it no longer had much influence on politics. In the same year she joined the Česká státoprávní demokracie party .
