František Ladislav Rieger (since 1897 František Ladislav Freiherr von Rieger ) (born December 10, 1818 in Semil , Bunzlauer Kreis , † March 3, 1903 in Prague ) was a Bohemian , k. k. Austrian publicist and politician .

Life

Rieger was the son of the miller Václav Rieger (1776–1841) from Semily in northern Bohemia and his wife Theresie Barbara Riegerová, nee. Wagenknecht (1795–1869). After training (including at the Clementinum in Prague) and high school diploma , he married Marie in 1853, the daughter of the historian František Palacký (1798–1876). The marriage resulted in the daughters Marie (1854–1895) and Libussa (1860–1930) as well as the son Bohuslav (1857–1907).

Rieger studied law at the University of Prague , received his doctorate in law there in 1847, and then worked temporarily in court with simultaneous journalistic and political activities. In the revolutionary year of 1848 he was a member of the National Committee in Prague, a participant in the Slavs Congress and a member of the Kremsier Reichstag . Rieger was a supporter of a federal restructuring of the Habsburg monarchy , and at a young age also a writer and publicist in the Czech language .

While studying economics in Paris in 1849 and from 1850 to 1851 during a longer stay in London, Rieger made a name for himself as the political representative of the Czech people in western countries. Returning to Prague, he was subjected to political harassment from 1851 to 1860, but emerged again as one of the most influential Czech politicians in the 1860s. In the so-called Rieger Manifesto in 1868 he formulated the Bohemian constitutional position and after the death of his father-in-law František Palacký in 1876 he became one of the leading figures of the Old Czech Party, which was founded in 1860 . From 1861 to 1871 and 1878 to 1895 he was a member of the Bohemian Landtag , from 1861 to 1863 a member of the Reichsrat and since 1897 a member of the manor house . After the failure of the attempt at a Bohemian compromise , which he supported , he withdrew from political life. He was u. a. Awarded the Order of the Iron Crown, 2nd class, in 1897 .

Rieger was the author of economic papers and wrote in French: Les Slaves d'Autriche et les Magyars (Paris 1861, published in Czech in 1906 after his death in 1903). In 1859, together with the bookseller and publisher Ignaz Leopold Kober, he published the Czech national encyclopedia Slovník naučný , which was published in ten volumes and a supplementary volume and was edited by Jakub Malý . When the Old Czech Party was finally constituted after the October diploma in 1860, Rieger and František Palacký belonged to the governing body. Rieger was also one of the authors of the Bohemian Declaration .
