Jakub Malý (1889)

Jakub Josef Dominik Malý (born August 4, 1811 in Prague ; † March 7, 1885 there ; pseudonym Budislav , Václav Pravda , abbreviation KZ ) was a Czech historian , writer and journalist .

The son of a middle-class family graduated from the academic high school and the philosophical and law faculties at Charles University in Prague. He was influenced by the teachings of Ignác Cornova , Bernard Bolzano and Josef Jungmann , moved in patriotic and literary circles and worked for a time as an educator in noble families.

In 1848 he embarked on a political career, becoming a conservative member of the National Committee Svatováclavský výbor roku in 1848 . As a supporter of the Czech national movement and Pan-Slavism (but slowed down by distrust of the Russians), he emphasized the importance of the Grünberg handwriting .

Works

In the 1930s, Malý published in patriotic conservative newspapers (Čechoslav, Jindy a nyní, Včela, Květy, Světozor, Hlas vlastenců, East and West, Panorama of the Universe, Obzor, Živě, Poutník od Otavy, Constitutional Journal from Bohemia, Slavic Newspaper, Národní noviny and ČČM) and helped Josef Jungmann with the creation of his German-Czech dictionary. He wrote poetry, also tried his hand at dramas and criticized literary works. He edited the from 1835 to 1844 library of entertainment literature , in which, among other things, a number of foreign fiction were translated.

At the end of the 1850s he edited his Bohemian National Cyclopedia Slovník naučný as an editor and employee of František Ladislav Rieger .

From his extensive work, National Bohemian Tales and Legends (Národní české pohádky a pověsti), his memoirs Memories and Reflections of an Old Patriot (Vzpomínky a úvahy starého vlastence), extensive historical descriptions of the national rebirth Our rebirth (Naše znovuzrození) and the popular History book History of the Czech Nation for readers of all classes (Dějepis národu českého pro čtenáře každého stavu). He mainly translated from German, French and English, including eleven dramas by William Shakespeare .
