Leningrad Cowboys Go America is a road movie by Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki from 1989.

action

The film tells the story of the Eastern European band Leningrad Cowboys , who are unsuccessful at home and are advised to go to America and play there. On their long journey through numerous hotels, bars and pubs, they finally end up at a wedding in Mexico. The audience is enthusiastic and after countless failures in the USA the band finally achieves the breakthrough they had hoped for.

criticism

“Road movie and music film that strings together ideas and gags of different quality and achieves some funny effects from coarsening. The bizarre humor from the beginning is not retained throughout. "

backgrounds

Jim Jarmusch took on a guest role, selling the musicians a black Cadillac for their tour. In Germany, the film has only been shown on television in the original language with subtitles. The originally fictional Leningrad Cowboys , some of which were played by members of the Finnish punk rock group Sleepy Sleepers , stayed together under this name after the filming and celebrated great success as a live band.

The regional origin of the band is not explicitly addressed in the film - it should give the impression that it is a band from north-eastern Europe, close to Russia (hence the rather Russian-sounding names like Vladimir or Igor ). At the beginning of the plot, however, the manager speaks to the band members in Finnish. After arriving in the USA, the dialogue changes to English.

continuation

With Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses a sequel was released in 1994, which is directly linked to the plot of the first film.
