occupation

Tatjana - Take Care Of Your Scarf , also Tatjana (Finnish original title: Pidä huivista kiinni, Tatjana ), is a Finnish comedy film directed by Aki Kaurismäki in 1994.

The film, shot in black and white, shows the stylistic devices typical of Kaurismäki. Wordless interactions with melancholy background music. Dadaist -looking productions in front of a dreary backdrop. The impressive display of emotional incompetence suggests realistic humor with laconic elements. The characters seem bizarre, sometimes eccentric, but contain a loving expression.

action

Valto lives as a tailor in the Finnish province. The test drive of his repaired car, an old Volga , with the mechanic Reino turns into a classic road movie.

On the way, the two male protagonists are picked up by two women - the Estonian Tatjana and the Russian Klavdia. The ladies are on their way to a Finnish port to take a ferry to Tallinn and from there to travel to their respective homeland. The four protagonists - apart from their common travel destination - are only connected by their uninterrupted tobacco consumption.

Valto, who always drinks coffee, and Reino, who appears in pubescent rocker fashion, have no communication with the opposite sex. Ultimately, Tatjana and Reino stay in Estonia together. Klavdia goes on her way and Valto returns to his mother's home tailoring.

Scenic details

The diverse musical productions are striking - sometimes as a live performance, sometimes as a framed TV scene, sometimes as radio or record player displays.

Recurring details are the coffee maker that is part of the car accessory and the portable record player .

Classic laconic humor is staged when Valto has the engine's oil dipstick wiped on his tie and Reino fine-tunes the engine by rigorously removing large-volume components.

Valto's daydream at the end of the film, in which he steers the Volga, occupied by all four protagonists, into a shop window, has no thematic continuation.

criticism

The film met with a positive response in the press.

"Aki Kaurismäki tries in vain to revive the mood and characters of his 'Proletarian Trilogy' ('Ariel' / 'Shadows in Paradise' / 'The Girl from the Match Factory'), but achieves nothing more than a mannerist memory work."

Awards (selection)

The production was awarded the Jussi for Best Film in 1995. Cinematographer Timo Salminen also won an award for his camera work.
