occupation

Juha is a film by the Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki from 1999. The black and white silent film with subtitles is based on the novel of the same name (German title: Schweres Blut) by Juhani Aho from 1911 and is the fourth adaptation of this story. While the plot of the novel takes place in the 18th century, the film plot is set in the 1970s.

action

Juha and his wife Marja live in a rural idyll in simple circumstances in the countryside. You run a farm. One day a stranger (Shemeikka) breaks down his car in front of her property and asks Juha for help. He shows himself to be helpful and looks at the car. Since he needs spare parts from the city for the repairs, the couple host Shemeikka for one night. While Juha is repairing the car, his wife is seduced by Shemeikka, who also tells her to leave Juha and come into town with him. Marja is initially skeptical, but after she has thought again about her situation there (she has to run the household and suffers from Juha's patriarchal-authoritarian behavior), she decides to leave her husband. She secretly sneaks away and leaves him a farewell letter.

In retrospect, it turns out that Marja von Shemeikka is forced into prostitution and her dream of a better life in the city is shattered. Meanwhile, Juha forges thoughts of revenge and, with a sharpened ax in his luggage, goes in search of his wife and Shemeikka. The two men fight. Shemeikka shoots Juha, who, however, still has the strength to pursue Shemeikka and ultimately kill him with an ax before succumbing to his gunshot wounds.

criticism

“A silent film based on a Finnish national epic. [...] A successful exercise in style full of (film historical) quotations. The powerful melodramatic effect is reinforced by a stylish musical background that underlines the mood of the characters. "
