Jussi
The Jussi ( Finnish Jussi-palkinto , German Johannes or Hans ) is Finland's national film award and one of the oldest film awards in Europe . It was first awarded in 1944 on the initiative of several film critics who joined forces to form the Filmiaura , the Finnish film academy. Since then, awards have been made to the best Finnish cinema productions and filmmakers of the previous cinema year every year at the end of January and beginning of February. Well-known artists such as Renny Harlin , Mika and Aki Kaurismäki , Outi Müllenpää and Kati Outinen are among the winners of the last few years . The Finnish production designer Tapio Vilpponen is considered to be the inventor of the film award, and was honored at the first award for his work on Herra ja ylhäisyys .
When the Jussis was awarded on January 29, 2012 in the Kaapelitehdas in Helsinki , Aki Kaurismäki's French-language tragic comedy Le Havre was able to assert itself as best film and in five other categories.
Nomination and voting guidelines
The Jussi winners are determined in two stages. First, an annually changing jury consisting of professional filmmakers (directors, actors, film producers, cameramen, authors, film editors, production designers and musicians) selects three nominees in each of the 14 award categories. The Filmiaura, consisting of around 260 filmmakers, then vote on these in a secret ballot. The winners will be awarded the stylized statuette of the same name during a gala, which was created by the Finnish artist Ben Renvall (1903–1979). It shows a standing man with a straw hat crossing his arms and is made entirely of plaster of paris . The name is taken from the main character of the well-known Finnish film Pohjalaisia (1925; re-filmed in 1936 with Eino Kaipainen ).
The film must have a running time of at least 60 minutes, premiered in the calendar year preceding the award ceremony and shown in a public cinema for at least seven days. It must also be possible to classify the film as a Finnish production, for example on the basis of the nationality of the participating artists, the co-producers or at least 50 percent funding from Finland. The classification is based on a point catalog (so-called “talent points”).
The storage and transport of the envelopes that announce the winner, is up to the notaries of the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the selbige task even with the award of the American Film Awards Oscar hold.
