Ville Virtanen (actor)
Ville Virtanen (born August 19, 1961 in Espoo , Finland ) is a Finnish actor , screenwriter , film director and writer .
Life
Ville Virtanen is the son of filmmaker and writer Jukka Virtanen and his wife Lisa. His sister Riikka Virtanen also worked as a make-up artist for Finnish film. He was married to actress Eija Vilpas and is currently married to actress Birthe Wingren . With Eija he has three children, Sinna, Daniel and Valdemar, all three of whom were also active as film actors or are currently still.
He studied acting at the Helsinki Theater Academy in the early 1980s and then worked at several Finnish theaters before making his official film acting debut in the 1985 television adaptation of William Shakespeare's Hamlet in the role of Gyldenstern. Unofficially, he made his screen debut at the age of five when, as a small child in kindergarten in 1966, he had an extra role in the comedy Millipilleri , written, directed and acted by his father .
Virtanen is best known internationally for his portrayals in films such as Priest of Evil , A Respectable Comedy and the Swedish drama Better Times . In the latter, he plays the Finnish immigrant Kimmo, who leads a life of poverty, addiction and false hopes with his alcoholic wife Aili, played by Outi Müllenpää . In 2011 he was nominated for the Swedish national film Guldbagge for his performance as Best Supporting Actor . Virtanen has been nominated twice for the Finnish film prize Jussi for Best Actor , once in 2009 for his portrayal of Eerik in Antti-Jussi Annila's horror film Sauna and once in 2011 for the portrayal of Mikael in Aleksi Salmenperä's drama Paha perhe , where he won the latter.
