Miracles of a winter night - The Christmas story (original title Joulutarina ) is a Finnish Christmas film from 2007 by Juha Wuolijoki . The film is based on the book of the same name by Marko Leino. The story is told of Nikolas, an orphan who has a special ability.

action

“The most beautiful story of all time began hundreds of years ago”: Nikolas is an orphan boy from Lapland whose parents and little sister are killed in a tragic accident. The families in the village where he lives are too poor to take the five-year-old boy. So they decide to raise him together. Each family takes care of it for a year and passes it on to the next family on Christmas Eve. Nikolas thanks the families by carving toys for their children, which he always presents on Christmas Eve. Accordingly, every year a family is added to join this Christmas tradition.

So year after year goes by. This year, however, the village's economy is idle, which is due to a failed grain harvest. That is the reason why none of the families in the village can take in Nikolas. So the grim carpenter Iisakki takes care of the boy and employs him as his assistant. After a tough apprenticeship, Nikolas finally manages to touch Iisakki's heart, so that from that day on he raises him like his own son.

As in the past, Christmas is the most beautiful and most important time of the year for Nikolas. And so it happens that over the years the old wood factory becomes more and more of a toy factory and the orphan boy Nikolas eventually becomes Santa Claus .

Reviews

The Lexicon of International Films stated: "Atmospheric film adaptation of a Finnish Christmas legend that appeals to people's hearts."

Julia Nolte found in Zeit Online that it was a "heartfelt film" and continued:

“The miracle of a winter night is free from fuss. It shows Nikolas as a quiet, brave child and withdrawn adult - as a hermit whose greatest happiness is to give something to others. This soulful film might be too sad for younger children. "

- Julia Nolte : Zeit Online

The German film and media rating awarded the rating particularly valuable. In the jury evaluation, she expressed herself as follows:

“With its chubby hero and its simple, but always lovingly designed characters embodied by the actors with the necessary seriousness, the film tells an elementary story that also deals with separation, death, parental love, loyalty and poverty. With a child-friendly, slow narrative pace and loving equipment, the highlights of which are some beautifully photographed highly romantic Finnish snowy landscapes, this pleasantly old-fashioned film is a perfect and atmospheric package for the holidays. Children and adults will love it. "

Prices

Mika Orasmaa received a Jussi for his camera work. In addition, the film was awarded the audience award at the Jussis 2008. He also received the Audience Award at the Sarasota Film Festival in Florida.
