production

History of origin

The writer and bestselling author Jo Nesbø also dealt with the occupation of Norway during World War II in his books . He was driven by the different reactions of his compatriots at the time. Parts of his family fought with the Nazis against Russia, others joined the resistance. He was concerned with the question of how people would react to a war situation today.

“I have often asked myself how I and my generation would have acted back then. It is difficult to judge the behavior of these people. That was the starting point for Occupied . "

Jo Nesbø wrote the first episodes of the story back in 2008. The series was originally supposed to be produced by NRK , the Norwegian state television. There was also a commitment for a production grant of NOK 9.7 million by the Norwegian Film Institute (NFI) in April 2013. After four years of planning, however, NRK withdrew from the project due to discrepancies and in October 2013 TV2 took the Project. Jo Nesbø describes himself as a big control freak. Therefore, after his conceptual preparatory work, he gave the project completely into the hands of Karianne Lund , Erik Richter Strand and Erik Skjoldbjærg . Harald Rosenløw Eeg , Jan Trygve Røyneland , Ina Bruha and Bjørn Paqualin were other members of the Writers Room.

The project was in advanced pre-production long before the Ukraine crisis . Jo Nesbø and the broadcaster reacted all the more astonished when Russia officially protested against the series because it would invoke the "danger from the east" in sensitive times. When asked, Jo Nesbø makes it clear that he is not interested in Russia, but rather a fictional examination of the question of how apparently stable democratic societies can be shaken to their foundations within a very short time and for the most unexpected reasons.

The broadcaster TV2 was also surprised at the reaction of Russia, because the Russian embassy had already been informed about the project three years in advance during the planning phase.

Marketing in German-speaking countries

The German-language release of the first season on DVD and Blu-ray took place on December 4, 2015. The second season followed on March 2, 2018.

Awards

The series won the New Creators Award 2015 at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival as the best series in the competition.
