Hippolyte Girardot (born October 10, 1955 in Boulogne-Billancourt , Hauts-de-Seine , Île-de-France ; actually Frédéric Yves Ernest Girardot ) is a French theater and film actor and director .

Life

Girardot, who was born under the name Frédéric Yves Ernest Girardot and grew up as an only child, originally wanted to become a production designer for film. After graduating from the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris , he turned to the theater and switched to acting. Through his mother, who was an acquaintance of the director Yannick Bellon , Girardot had been in front of the camera for the first time in 1974 as the son of Claude Rich in Bellon's film Liberation from Marriage , but initially had no career as an actor. After a series of odd jobs, he was finally seen regularly on the screen and on the theater stage from 1980. In 1985, he received his first nomination for the César in the category of best young actor for the role of a handbag thief in Francis Girod's political drama Le bon Plaisir - A political love affair with Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Louis Trintignant .

In Claude Berri's drama Manon's Revenge (1986), he then starred alongside Emmanuelle Béart , Yves Montand and Daniel Auteuil . For his role in the comedy A World Without Compassion (1989), in which he played an ambitious, disaffected representative of an entire generation, and for his portrayal of a photographer kidnapped in Lebanon in the war drama Night without End - Hors la Vie (1991), he received a César nomination in the category Best Actor . This was followed by other leading roles, such as in 1994 in The Perfume by Yvonne directed by Patrice Leconte , and more important supporting roles, such as in the artist biography Modigliani (2004), in which he played the painter Maurice Utrillo alongside Andy Garcia , who held the title role . In 2006 he was one of the international star cast of the episode film Paris, je t'aime . In the same year the award-winning film adaptation of Lady Chatterley followed , in which he played the handicapped husband of the heroine.

Together with the Japanese filmmaker Nobuhiro Suwa , Girardot made his directorial debut in 2009 under the title Yuki & Nina , which premiered at a side event at the Cannes International Film Festival and is about a Japanese girl who lives in Paris and her parents divorced with the help of her French girlfriend and thus wants to prevent the move to Japan. Over the years Girardot has also worked in numerous television productions, such as the mystical multi-part television series Dolmen - The Sacrilege of Stones (2005) or in the first French Netflix series in Marseille (2016-2017) with Gérard Depardieu .

He is not related to Annie Girardot . His daughter Ana Girardot , who emerged from a relationship with actress Isabel Otero , followed in her parents' footsteps and is also an actress. With the film producer Kristina Larsen (* 1968) he has another daughter and two sons.
