It's 1990 and Patrick is invited to a high-class party where Princess Margaret will show up. He tries to get over his past and seeks help from his friend Johnny, who is in a therapy group. At the party, Princess Margaret is rude and refuses to meet the hostess's daughter, which reminds Patrick of his own childhood when his father forbade his mother to check on her son during a meal in France. Patrick later opens up to Johnny and tells him about his father's abuse for years when he was young. The episode ends with Patrick meeting his former drug dealer Chilly Willy, who played in the band at the party. Patrick also agrees to meet Mary for breakfast the next morning.

In 2003 Patrick is sober and works as a lawyer. He brings his wife Mary and their two children to the south of France to visit his seriously ill mother who has suffered a stroke. Eleanor fell for the dubious guru Seamus, who convinced her to hand over the house to the "foundation" he runs. The disinheritance evokes his hostility towards his mother in Patrick, so he starts drinking and using drugs again. His marriage to Mary also suffers, which Patrick worsens by having an affair with his ex-girlfriend Julia. Coping with the loss of his parents' home, Patrick blesses his mother's plans and offers to bring her to London. He then takes his family to Connecticut to meet his snobby aunt Nancy. There he loses control of his addiction. After an angry confrontation with Nancy, Mary confronts Patrick and gives him an ultimatum: either he will sober up or he will leave.

It's April 2005 and Eleanor Melrose has passed away, so Patrick is organizing her funeral. Flashbacks of Patrick's life over the past two years are shown, in which we see that his drinking problem continued unabated after he separated from Mary and his children. Eventually he went to rehab and after initially resisting the trial and even escaping, he focused back on his recovery. His mother, bedridden in a nursing home in London, insisted on being euthanized. So Patrick asked the British government to have them brought to Switzerland. After getting approval, Eleanor changes her mind at the last minute. There's also a flashback to when Mary and Patrick realize his father was a serial child molester. Patrick confronts his mother for the first time about the abuse, and she claims she was also abused by David. Eleanor's funeral turns into a bizarre show when old acquaintances get together. Patrick tries to balance the positive portrait of Eleanor that others knew with his own experience as a negligent mother. |
