Hugo Weaving
Hugo Wallace Weaving (born April 4, 1960 in Ibadan , Nigeria ) is a British - Australian actor and voice actor . He gained fame mainly through the portrayal of Agent Smith in the Matrix trilogy and the Elf Elrond in Peter Jackson's trilogies The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit .
Life
Weaving was born in Nigeria to British parents. His father was a seismologist by profession . Weaving grew up with his parents, older brother Simon and little sister Anna in South Africa and the United Kingdom . In 1976 he moved to Australia and began an acting career. After graduating from Knox Grammar School in Sydney and the National Institute of Dramatic Art , which also produced great actors like Mel Gibson and Geoffrey Rush , he built a successful stage and film career.
He began his acting career with various Australian television series and films. In 1989 he starred in one of the bigger roles alongside Nicole Kidman in the Bangkok Hilton miniseries . In 1991 he received an Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor for his leading role in the low-budget film Proof .
Weaving received first international attention in 1994 for the portrayal of the lead role in Priscilla - Queen of the Desert . He achieved worldwide fame through the roles as Agent Smith in the Matrix trilogy (1999-2003) and the Elf Elrond in the films of The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003).
In 2005, while filming was already in progress, he stepped in as a masked leading actor in the film V for Vendetta for his colleague James Purefoy , who had dropped out of the project due to artistic differences with the director. Most of the scenes in the film were shot with Weaving, the recordings made with Purefoy were dubbed by Weaving. In the German version, Weaving is dubbed by Oliver Stritzel .
In 2006 he appeared at the Brooklyn Academy of Music alongside Cate Blanchett in the Sydney Theater Company's production of the Henrik Ibsen play Hedda Gabler . Starting in 2007, Weaving took over the voice of Megatron in the Transformers franchise from director Michael Bay. In 2010, Weaving starred in Joe Johnston's Wolfman as the investigative inspector. A year later, he played the role of Nazi villain Red Skull in the comic book adaptation of Captain America: The First Avenger , which Johnston directed again.
In 2012 he took over the role of Elrond again in Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit . The first film was released in the winter of 2012 under the title The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in cinemas. In the third and last part of the series, which started in December 2014, Weaving also appeared again in his role as elven prince.
Personal
The on epilepsy sufferer Weaving lives with his wife Katrina Greenwood and his two children in Sydney . He is an active supporter and donor of the environmental organization Voiceless , which campaigns for Australian animal rights.
