Geoffrey Roy Rush AC (born July 6, 1951 in Toowoomba , Queensland , Australia ) is an Australian actor and Oscar winner . He achieved his international breakthrough in 1996 with the award-winning film Shine .

Life

Rush is the only child of Roy Rush, an accountant (with Australian roots), and Merle Rush, a saleswoman (with German roots). He celebrated his first successes on the theater stage before turning to film. There the lean, tall man specializes in character roles. In Shine , for example, he portrayed the gifted pianist David Helfgott , who fluctuated between genius and madness due to a schizoaffective disorder .

In Elizabeth he was equally impressive as the devious, bisexual head of the secret service of the "virgin" Queen Elizabeth I , in order to impersonate a sleazy theater producer in Shakespeare in Love against a similar historical background. In 2000 he played the role of Marquis de Sade in Quills . In Munich in 2005 he showed a nuanced character study in the role of an unscrupulous and cynical Mossad agent and in 2001 in Boorman's Der Schneider von Panama, loosely based on John le Carré, the title character as a flimsy source for a news service. Even in blockbusters like Jerry Bruckheimer's pirate film Pirates of the Caribbean , Rush proved his talent as a dark, cursed pirate captain . His portrayal of the exceptional actor Peter Sellers in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers was also recognized by the critics as being highly skilled. He also worked with directors and auteur filmmakers such as Bille August , Julie Taymor , John Madden , Shekhar Kapur , Philip Kaufman , Australians such as Russell Mulcahy , Gillian Armstrong and Scott Hicks , and with Steven Spielberg and Gore Verbinski . In the four-time Oscar-winning film The King's Speech (2010), he embodied the language trainer of King George VI, whose unorthodox methods showed sensational success.

In 2011, Geoffrey Rush was named president of the newly formed Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts . Rush has been married to actress Jane Menelaus since 1988 and has two children with her.
