Candy is a 2006 Australian film.

action

The film is about the love story between Candy and Dan who make the ideal couple. The pretty Candy is a talented painter and comes from a family with extremely conservative values. The equally attractive Dan is a talented poet. There is only one big problem in their relationship: both are addicted to heroin. This leads the couple into a vortex that they never seem to find their way out of. In addition, Candy falls out with her parents Jim and Elaine Wyatt. The only support they still have from Casper, a professor who, however, is himself a drug addict and keeps supplying them with material.

Her everyday life is soon only dominated by raising money for her addiction: Candy prostitutes herself, while Dan becomes a criminal after he has sold the last usable items from the household. Since almost all of their money is spent on drugs, they just vegetate and their lives become unbearable pain. After an argument with her parents and Dan, Candy has a nervous breakdown and is admitted to rehab. Only now does she see the possibility of turning her life around.

Reviews

  • Die Welt , September 17th, 2006: "... Director Neil Armfield has divided his junkie passion into the chapters" Heaven "," Earth "and" Hell "in order to lead Candy and Dan straight into misery. From the happiness of the first intoxication, after a short phase of arrogance ("We're just the coolest here at McDonald's!"), It goes straight to the pawn shop and on the line. Whether cold withdrawal, miscarriage or relapse - Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish as Candy play with admirable devotion ... "
  • Die Zeit , February 9, 2006: "In the role of the increasingly pale junkie, Heath Ledger doesn't deliver a great performance, but a selfless one - like someone who wants to reorient themselves and try out a bit."
  • critic.de: “Abbie Cornish give the close and self-destructive relationship a seldom seen intensity: Cornish as a blonde, beautiful, adventurous girl and Ledger as an introverted, insecure man with a fear of responsibility, at whom it gnaws more and more, the deeper it is Life becomes hopeless. Its lines of dialogue, pressed through the teeth, and their dreamlike, angelic presence are the focus of the film. "
  • The film was awarded the rating of Particularly Valuable by the Wiesbaden Film Evaluation Office. The reason given in the FBW report includes, among other things: “ Candy is committed, stirring, thrilling cinema at the highest level. It is a film that manages to cast a spell over the viewer in a way that no other film on this topic has succeeded in since We Children from Zoo Station . "
