John Madden (Director)

John Madden (born April 8, 1949 in Portsmouth ) is a British theater and film director .

Career

After Madden began directing at the theater in England, he went to the USA in 1975 . There he initially designed radio plays and soon began to work on Broadway . After a stint as an acting teacher at Yale University , he returned to England in the 1980s and directed various television films for the BBC .

His cinema breakthrough came in 1997 with the film Her Majesty Mrs. Brown . Judi Dench starred as Queen Victoria of Great Britain. A year later he was commissioned to direct Shakespeare in Love . The film became the most successful film of 1999 and received seven Academy Awards . For Madden, however, the nomination for best director remained.

Madden's next film was Corelli's Mandolin, starring Nicolas Cage . In mid-September 2005 his film The Proof - Love Between Genius and Madness was released in the USA with Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins in the leading roles. Further film projects followed. In 2013 he directed the pilot episode of the Masters of Sex series .
