Corelli's Mandolin (original title: Captain Corelli's Mandolin ) is a film adaptation from 2001 of the novel of the same name by Louis de Bernières . The story takes place on the Greek island of Kefalonia during and after World War II .

action

On the tranquil Greek island of Kefalonia , life continued to run smoothly during the Second World War, even after Italy declared war on Greece in 1940 .

During this time, Pelagia, the daughter of the doctor Iannis, and the fisherman Mandras want to marry. When Mandras is called up for military service, the two officially become engaged.

Pelagia writes hundreds of letters to Mandras, but waits in vain for an answer or news about the fiancé. He cannot answer your letters because he is illiterate.

The Greek troops successfully fight the Italians in Albania. When the German Reich intervened on their side in the fighting, the Greeks were defeated. The authorities on the island refuse to surrender to the Italians, but then surrender to the German captain and liaison officer Weber from Tyrol. The Italians occupy the island.

After the arrival of the Italians, Pelagia's father Iannis reluctantly offers Corelli a room as accommodation in return for medication. Although initially repelled by him, Pelagia comes closer to the musically interested Corelli. She decides to love him and thus against her fiancé, who has since joined the Greek resistance.

When Italy stopped fighting in 1943, the Germans demanded the disarming of the Italian troops under Corelli. Mandras, on the other hand, calls on Corelli not to leave his weapons to the enemy and instead give them to the resistance fighters. Weber, who is a former companion of Corelli, eventually forces a gun handover that leads to a fatal incident. An Italian who refuses to surrender his rifle provokes a German soldier and is then shot with three other comrades.

After this incident and negotiations between the Italian and the German commanders, the Italians decide to use gun violence to defend themselves. Thereupon the German troops conquer the island with great military superiority - they use a fleet of warships, armored landing craft and dive bombers. In the course of the occupation, the German soldiers massacre the Greek civilian population and the Italian soldiers under Corelli. The badly injured Corelli is rescued by Mandras, who is still fighting for Pelagia's love, and then operated on and cared for by Pelagia and her father.

Corelli flees by boat, while the island is quiet again. Pelagia begins medical school to become a doctor. Two years later, an earthquake suddenly throws the residents into chaos. Dr. Iannis barely survives the collapse of his house. But the wistful Corelli reappears, and the story comes to its happy ending.

criticism

“A film that ignores the folk and music history of the successful novel by Louis de Bernières, which gets neither the romantic nor the realistic side of the story under control. Also very disappointing in terms of performance. "

Historical background

The historical background of the subject is the illegal shooting of 5,200 Italian prisoners of war by German mountain troops (→ massacre on Kefalonia ) in September 1943. While Italy has been receiving this massacre since the end of the war as L'eccidio di Cefalonia (Italian: massacre of Kefalonia) it was not made known to the broader German public until 1969 through a Spiegel article.
