action

Elizabeth Sloane is an unscrupulous lobbyist that a hearing is preloaded (United States congressional hearing) under the leadership of Senator Ronald Sperling to questions about possible violations of ethics rules of the Senate during her time as an employee of the Washington lobbying firm Cole Kravitz & Waterman to answer.

Three months and a week earlier, Sloane's company was visited by the pistol manufacturer Bob Sanford to lead the opposition campaign against the so-called Heaton Harris bill, which aims to expand background checks on weapons purchases . Sloane is said to use the money from the gun lobby to raise an independent organization that targets the female population. Sloane ridicules Sanford's idea, angering her boss, who fears the loss of an important customer. She is later approached by Rodolfo Schmidt, head of rival lobbying firm Peterson Wyatt, to instead lead the campaign for advocates of the law tightening. Sloane agrees and takes most of her staff with her, but her personal assistant Jane Molloy wants to stay.

At Peterson-Wyatt, Sloane appoints Esme Manucharian as media officer, and they begin to gain substantial Senator votes. Sloane discovers that Esme has been secretly involved in a rampage at her school and asks if she would agree to come out if it was a matter of victory or defeat. Esme evasively replies that she only wants to be treated as part of the team. Later, Sloane is apparently provoked in a live television debate and compares the second amendment to the constitution with her horoscope. Subsequently, Sloane calls on her opponent to represent his position towards the survivors of a rampage. Being outed like this hurts Esme, but Sloane convinces her to exploit that advantage. With Esme as the public face of the campaign, they are recruiting more senators and are now aiming to mobilize the female electorate. While on a lecture tour, Esme is threatened by a man with a gun because of her position in the campaign, but her attacker is shot dead by a civilian who holds a gun license . The gun lobby is cannibalizing this incident, causing support for the Heaton Harris Bill to decline. This is compounded by news of Sloane's Senate subpoena for potentially illegal lobbying practices. The Heaton Harris bill is deemed dead and Sloane beaten.

The narrative returns to the congressional hearing. Forde, a call boy who has been engaged by Sloane on several occasions , is questioned, but denies ever being paid by Sloane, and with this perjury keeps his promise to never reveal the identity of customers. Senator Sperling produces a form that arranged the overseas trips for a member of Congress and was submitted by a non-profit organization , but is completed in Sloane's handwriting, indicating that she illegally played a role in organizing the trip . Sloane ironically asks if this formal error is all he has to say against her. Sperling also asks Sloane if she has ever used wiretapping , which she denies.

In her final testimony at the hearing, Sloane reveals that if she were too successful on Peterson Wyatt on the Heaton-Harris-Bill, she anticipated an attack against her. She reveals that Jane Molloy continued to work for Sloane as a mole . Sloane can also use evidence captured by a real, remote-controlled cockroach - which inconspicuously records and broadcasts audio and video - to prove that Senator Sperling was extorted by Cole Kravitz & Waterman boss George Dupont and accepted bribes .

Ten months later, Sloane is visited by her lawyer in the women's prison and we learn that the Heaton Harris Bill has been passed. It is also revealed that Sloane deliberately held out her head with the - resilient - hand-filled form for the overseas trips to protect her team.

While the credits roll, Sloane is seen leaving prison; However, it does not show whether someone or who will pick you up there.

reception

In August 2016, two Chastain movie posters were released. The film had its world premiere at AFI Fest on November 11, 2016 and was also shown at the Napa Valley Film Festival on November 13, 2016. The release was scheduled for December 9, 2016 and was later brought forward to November 25.

Gross profit

The film was released concurrently with Office Christmas Party and The Bounce Back, as well as the expanded release of Nocturnal Animals . The expected opening weekend earnings should be $ 2-4 million, but only $ 1.8 million was made at the box office on November 11, 2016. Overall, the film fetched $ 3.5 million versus its production cost of $ 13 million. The Invention of Truth ranks 77th on the Box Office Mojo list of the lowest-grossing films per theatrical opening weekend that have been released since 1982.

criticism

The invention of the truth received generally positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes , the film has an approval rating of 71% based on 131 reviews. The average rating is 6.5 out of 10 points. The criticism there reads: “The film rests on the shoulders of the leading actress Jessica Chastain; she answers this with an award-winning work that carries the film alone. ”On Metacritic , the film achieved 63%, based on 37 ratings. In a survey by CinemaScore , viewers gave the school grade 1– on average.

Marie Schmidt from ZEIT Online praised the contrast between Miss Sloane, played by Jessica Chastain, and the actress herself, but also criticized the film as such. She wrote: “The contrast between the cynical coldness of her character and the fine-nerved sensitivity of the actress gives this film a charisma it doesn't really deserve. Because this film, staged and edited with a routine drive, is an outrage that, like political populism, puts on a big theater around the idea that 'those up there' would deal our fate among themselves, with greed for power and many millions of dollars. "Verena Lueken von der Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, however, criticized the film as tough. "It is true that some parts of the scene are cut rapidly, with some sharpness in talking and arguing, but the figures do not take shape, so that ultimately it does not matter to the audience who wins the battles."

David Kleingers from SPIEGEL Online highlighted the acting performance of Jessica Chastain and the Elisabeth Sloane she played. He came to the following conclusion: “Supported by a strong ensemble, the film [...] sets the stage for the expansive performance of 'Miss Sloane' - the original title - and it is both a volatile and cynical pleasure to have Jessica Chastain's lobbyist Watching opinion-making in the corridors of power. Another narrative might have focused on a dramatic purification process for the character, but Elisabeth Sloane's ethical and interpersonal ambiguity remains incalculable until the exciting finale. "

Hans-Georg Rodeck from the newspaper Die Welt saw a duality in the film consisting of the "portrait of a woman who puts professional success above everything" and a "look behind the scenes of an activity that another film character" has been the most morally corrupt profession since Spirit healers "calls." The invention of truth is the moral painting of an industry and the soul painting of a woman who has resolved to overtake men in Taffness by far. And Jessica Chastain also gave the best performance of her career, which was not poor in high points. Rodeck praised the film as "witty, condensed and (mostly) one and a half turns ahead of the thinking audience."

Christian Schröder, who works for the newspaper Der Tagesspiegel , saw The Invention of Truth as a demonstration of how corrupted manners were, as well as a comment on the importance of fake news in the times of Donald Trump . He concluded: “If you didn't already know from the presidential series ' House of Cards ' that the laws of Shakespeare apply in Washington - you would learn it in 'The Invention of Truth'. However, at the end of the film, the film is a bit over the top, and that Sloane, an unsatisfied career woman unable to relate, has to meet call boys is an annoying cliché. But Jessica Chastain keeps her secret until the end. In the midst of incessant chatter, it's an Oscar-worthy performance. ” Knut Elstermann also praised the acting performance of Jessica Chastain:“ Jessica Chastain's differentiated play in this ambiguous role is an event. A highly intelligent woman who wants good by bad means. The powerful thriller also reveals the manipulative processes behind political decisions made by politicians, influenced and controlled by people without a mandate like Miss Sloane, whom no one voted for. "

Patrick Seyboth from epd Film said that director John Madden managed to ensure that the mixture of character studies and political thriller never gets boring. His staging focuses on the characters and their interaction and demonstrates a keen sense for subtle visual accents - exactly the right recipe for dealing with the dialog fireworks of the script. “You can tell that it is the work of a debutante: As much sharpness as the verbal skirmishes from the pen of Jonathan Perera unfold and as elegantly interwoven the topics of truth, identity and morality are, so over-ambitious appear at the latest in the last quarter the film's increasingly implausible twists. How much stronger this film could have been had the producers insisted on a few less surprises. In the end, some of the impact of the story fizzles out, while Miss Sloane remains unappealing, but very fascinating. "

Lucas Barwenczik from the portal for film and cinema kino-zeit.de saw the film The Invention of Truth as a character study that succeeds on the basis of moments. "Occasionally, Chastain elicits an interesting gesture, a particularly cold look, or the opposite - a brief derailment, an eruption, maybe even a hint of doubt from the unscrupulous lobbyist. Sloane is a character who wears masks over masks. [...] A moral, emotional core is suggested, hidden deep under layers of pragmatism, but actually it is not about any kind of revelation. One last layer of armor remains, fortunately: there would have been no value in its final deconstruction. The palpable pounding of a heart in this case is more exciting than the open chest. "However, Barwenczik criticized that everything revolved around the character of Elisabeth Sloane:" Even the minor characters, played by stars like Mark Strong or John Lithgow , are never more than their function, reference points in the Elizabeth Sloane system. If John Madden had wanted to be consistent, he would only have needed one actress. "
