Reviews
The lexicon of international films states: “ The film skilfully combines poetic and critical elements and, in sometimes moving dialogues, advocates Asian virtues versus American lifestyle. "
Washington Post reviewer David Mills is undecided as to how the film, which appears in the guise of a fairy tale and at the same time wants to be a thigh-slapping satire (" At the same time [...] seems to think it's a knee-slapping satire as well ") to be classified. The film tackles unusually serious topics such as red fear , social injustice, abuse of police authority, guilt, shame and suicide (" yet [...] tackling subjects not usually thought of as comic: the Red Scare, racial injustice, governmental abuse of police powers, guilt, shame, suicide ”). Mills, on the other hand, considers the enchanting and immediate interplay of Matt Dillon and the fascinating (“ mesmerizing ”) Joan Chen (“ Here are simply two gorgeous actors playing at falling in love - over a malted milkshake, no less! - and it is lovely ").
Janet Maslin wrote in the New York Times that the film was a "great failure". The script is based on a play, the narration of which is very different from the script of a film. She heavily criticized the direction of John Madden.
Remarks
The film, shot in San Francisco and on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, grossed almost $ 400,000 in US cinemas.
