Michael Stuhlbarg (born July 5, 1968 in Long Beach , California ) is an American actor .

Life

Stuhlbarg grew up in Long Beach and played theater as a child. From 1986 to 1988 he studied at the Department of Theater of UCLA , then at the Juilliard School in New York , where he also graduated.

He has been playing at the New York Broadway Theater since the early 1990s . He received an Elliot Norton Award for his portrayal of Edmund Tyrone in Long Day's Journey Into Night , a 1996 American Repertory Theater production . In 2005 he starred in John Crowley's successful production of Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman at the Booth Theater , alongside Billy Crudup , Jeff Goldblum and Željko Ivanek . For this work, Stuhlbarg was awarded the 2005 Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor nominated.

Since the mid-2000s he has increasingly taken on television and film roles alongside his theater work. He appeared in episodes of Law & Order and Ugly Betty and played a major role in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire directed by Martin Scorsese , with whom he had worked in the 2007 Hitchcock parody The Key to Reserva . After a few supporting roles, he was first seen in the cinema in 2009 in a leading role: In A Serious Man by the Coen Brothers , he plays Larry Gopnik, a Jewish physics professor in Minneapolis in 1967. His performance brought him, among other things, the Satellite Award and a Golden Globe nomination. As a result, Stuhlbarg was primarily cast in intellectual roles, not infrequently with a Jewish background.

In early 2011, Stuhlbarg played a character role in the 3D production Hugo Cabret (again directed by Martin Scorsese). He then played a role in the 3D production Men in Black 3 . In the following years, Stuhlbarg embodied several historical figures, such as the politician George Helm Yeaman in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln (2012), the Apple software developer Andy Hertzfeld in Steve Jobs (2015) and the film star Edward G. Robinson in Trumbo (2015). In 2017 Stuhlbarg appeared as a supporting actor in three films that were nominated for Best Picture at the 2018 Academy Awards : In The Shape of Water he played a Russian scientist and spy, in Call Me by Your Name he played the father of Main actor Timothée Chalamet and in Die Verlegerin he can be seen alongside Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in the historical role of Abraham Michael Rosenthal .

Stuhlbarg has been married to Mai-Linh Lofgren since August 2013.
